Meet David Eng
David moved to Prince Rupert in 2011 and loves the small town charm, rich First Nations culture, friendly people and spectacular fishing. Since 2012 David has been the owner-operator of Sunset Charters and he is happy to share the superb fishing and marine wildlife viewing with clients. “It’s a real thrill to take people to one of the world’s most dramatic fishing grounds,” says Dave. "this area is amazing – the wildlife is as stunning as the scenery. “There’s a huge number of beautiful inlets and island groups whose nooks and crannies we can explore by boat.” Back on shore, Dave notes, there are many hidden gems within minutes of Prince Rupert. “There are lots of little access points that get you get down to a quiet piece of beach, a creekside trail, or a hike through the forest with a stunning view at the end." David is growing his business along the principles of sustainability and protecting the environment. He recognizes that tourism relies on the region’s natural beauty and the health of its flora and fauna. “Even though we are out catching and keeping fish every day, we try to educate our guests on the impact of fishing and how we can minimize it,” he says.
Prince Rupert is a friendly, relaxing town and David is delighted to be a part of the business community. “I’m proud of growing my business here and supporting other small businesses by doing as much as possible here in town and it’s great to see the other businesses doing the same.”
He shops at local tackle stores and marine suppliers, and has high praise for eateries such as the Fresh Onion Cafe and Bob’s on the Rocks. He’s also a fan of the Wheelhouse Brewery, which he says is the best place in town to grab a pint after the fishing trip of a lifetime.
Dynamic. Exciting. Adventurous.
Sunset Charters’ clients are in for a dynamic adventure. Guests travel to the fishing grounds in comfortable, customized, fully licensed and insured 26-foot Zeta vessels. There are flexible options for trips of one to four days. Guests can choose to return to Prince Rupert at the end of each day or stay in remote floating accommodation close to prime fishing spots. Depending on the time of year, the coastal waters are home to five species of Pacific salmon, with coho and chinook being the most sought-after. The halibut fishing is also excellent.
David’s hand-picked, friendly guides know where to find fish. They have all the necessary certifications, as well as years in the fishing and tourism industries. Sunset Charters make sure guests not only have fun and catch fish but also do so safely and comfortably. Fishing gear and bait are supplied and Sunset Charters can arrange lunch on request.
