Meet Dan Hendrickson & Tobie Wick
Though independent businesses in small towns face some unique challenges, they also have many advantages. One of those, notes Cargo Kitchen & Bar owners Dan Hendricksen and Tobie Wick, is the ability to connect easily with locals. “The connection with the community is much deeper in a small town,” says Dan. Though they only opened in 2014, they noticed right away how receptive the community was to their business. “Our business rapidly became part of the fibre of the community,” Dan states. Dan and Tobie appreciate the ongoing feedback they receive from their customers, whether it is in the restaurant or when they bump into someone on the sidewalks of town.
Tobie, a fourth generation Ruperite who is of Gitxan ancestry (her grandfather was Chief Ken Harris), grew up in Prince Rupert but moved to Vancouver as a young adult. It was here that she met Dan. The couple eventually decided to trade city life for small town living and moved to Tobie’s hometown. They were immediately impressed by the sense of familiarity and camaraderie between its residents. “We were amazed how many new friends went out of their way to make sure that we were enjoying our new town,” Dan says, and adds, “we love that everyone is connected in some small way or another. I think this connection fosters a spirit of cooperation in a small town that is sometimes missed in larger towns and cities.”
Business ownership has been rewarding for Dan and Tobie in ways that can never be measured by dollars. They appreciate the opportunities that entrepreneurship continually provides them to be creative. They are grateful to be able to envision a goal and then take steps to reach it. Dan and Tobie also feel privileged to be able to invest in people, particularly the ones who work for them. Mentoring is an important aspect of their business, and few things are as exciting as watching an employee catch their vision for the business. “It’s a great feeling when you can begin to pull back from a business because the people you work with understand and share your goals,” says Dan. Also rewarding has been the ability to set aside a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds each month to be donated in the form of gift certificates to local groups and fundraisers as a way of investing in the community that has been so supportive of their business.

Cargo Kitchen & Bar is a family restaurant dedicated to providing friendly service and serving great food. Cargo Kitchen & Bar is famous for its tantalizing gourmet burgers, each named after a fishing boat built by co-owner Tobie Wicks’ grandfather in decades past. From the bar, guests can choose from a selection of fine wines and five craft beers on tap (if you have a hard time choosing, try a craft beer sampler) as well as cocktails. Cargo Kitchen & Bar is a licensed facility and is available for reservations and group events.
