Meet Frances Riley & Richard Haley

Meet Frances Riley & Richard Haley

For Frances Riley, the venture into small business ownership was an act of self-preservation. She had always worked 9 - 5 jobs but the work felt unfulfilling. The idea of working for herself and marking out her own future was appealing, and fortunately, her husband Richard Haley agreed. They opened The Argosy in 2013 and have never regretted their decision. Entrepreneurship has proved to be both challenging and rewarding for the couple. For Richard, it has provided "the freedom to act on instinct and try out new ideas without having to ask permission," he says, adding, "well, except for Frances'." He also enjoys the freedom of not being locked into only one job or business venture. Plus, "every day brings the unexpected, which keeps me interested."

Not only do they get to set goals according to their own vision, Richard and Frances also get to help the environment through their work. They are proud to be able to build a business around the idea of recycling, upcycling and re-purposing. "We provide an outlet for many pieces that might otherwise find their way into a landfill, but giving them a new life and even a new purpose," says Frances.

Frances and Richard have seen firsthand how much difference it makes when locals support locally. "I really see how dollars move around the community, flowing between businesses that are owned by my friends and neighbours, benefiting local events and charities," says Frances. "It's been eye-opening." In fact, in a small community, Frances points out, everything that happens touches every community member in some way. "Everything that happens here truly affects me, and matters to me," she says.
